History
in a Nutshell
Azerbaijan
is a diverse and growing culture with approximately
7,617,000 people of Turkish, Seljuq, Iranian and Russian
backgrounds. The national capital is Baku.
The national language is Azerbaijan and the national currency
is the manat.
Religious
diversity exists as well, with worshippers of Islam
and Orthodox Christianity as the predominant faiths.
Azerbaijan
is characterized by a variety of landscapes. More than
40% of its territory is lowlands. The Caspian Sea serves
Baku as a trade outlet. Agriculture, petroleum refining,
and light manufacturing are economically important.
Azerbaijan
is a republic with one legislative body; its head of
state and government is the president assisted by the
prime minister. Russia acquired the provinces
of modern-day Azerbaijan in the early 19th century.
After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Azerbaijan declared
its independence; it was subdued by the Red Army in
1920 and became a Soviet Socialist Republic. Azerbaijan
declared its independence from the U.S.S.R. in 1991.
Adoption
Procedure
As
with most eastern European countries, children available
for adoption are primarily Caucasian and are anywhere
from 6-18 months old at the time of adoption.
All children come from orphanage programs. Most
children have some minor health or developmental problem
associated with life in an orphanage. Married
couples and single women are eligible to adopt in Azerbaijan.
At the present time, there are no age limitations.
Once a completed dossier is submitted, a child referral
is received about 4-8 weeks later.
Adoption
in Azerbaijan requires two separate trips. During
your first visit, you will meet your child and file
the necessary paperwork to begin your adoption.
A second trip to Azerbaijan is necessary to finalize
your Azerbaijani adoption. You will also need
to travel to Moscow for two days to obtain the necessary
visa information for your child.
After
accepting a child referral, you have the option to have
your child examined by a western-trained
physician.
This is an additional expense, however, the physician
reports back directly to Homecming Adoptions.
This option offers families an additional source of
information about their child.
